The history of Beares
The Beares story begins at the furniture-manufacturing business in Johannesburg that was started by brothers Jack and Hyman Beare. In 1918 they relocated their business to Durban where they opened a shop. Although machinery was practically unobtainable during this time, the duo relied on their skills as cabinet-maker and engineer to craft machinery out of scrap metal.
As the post-war economy improved, the Beare brothers started importing the best available machinery from England, allowing them to design good-quality furniture at a sensible cost. In 1926 they moved their business into their own 3-storey factory and by the early 1930s the company was already working on big government contracts.
But it was with the opening of their first retail store in 1933 (by Jack’s son, Aaron) that the brand started selling furniture directly to the South African public. This move catapulted the trio and their business to immense success and it was decided to discontinue their manufacturing operation.
And with three directors on board, it was time for a more suitable logo to fit the brand. Hence, the much-loved “three little Beares” logo was born.
