Unlike the majority of business founders, Gary Carlisle has no dreams to turn Honey into South Africa’s biggest fashion company. Instead, he wants to make all women look and feel beautiful via Honey’s amazing (and well-priced) range of accessories, whether it’s a teenager’s trendy earrings or some classic shoes for a more mature fashionista.

The history of Honey Fashion Accessories

After a decade in the jewellery industry, Gary Carlisle was quite frustrated as he preferred working with consumers and not retailers. In his own words: “Most of my aggravation was caused by the fact that, although we’d take great care to present our jewellery as a collection, retailers would stock our earrings but not the matching necklace and bracelet. Worse still, if they did buy more than one item, they would dilute the power of the collection by scattering the pieces randomly rather than displaying them as a unit.”

It was Carlisle’s belief that he could sell far more jewellery if he could work directly with consumers. And after hosting only one jewellery party for friends, he knew he was right. This led to Carlisle joining forces with Margot Bredenkamp to kick-start the Honey brand – while she takes care of merchandising and the sales team, he manages sales and marketing.

The irony is that, during those early days, Honey didn’t have any money for a catalogue. But today, as much as 80% of all Honey sales are made through catalogues, even though the brand still hosts regular client days for visitors wishing to try on jewellery.
