About Decathlon
Decathlons main priority has always been sports people - not necessarily stars, but the average person who’s into exercising, training and, ultimately, winning. This focus has filtered through into the design and layout of the brand’s stores, where numerous products are available for testing and trying - how else are you going to know if that tent is the right size for a family camping trip, if those golf clubs are ideal for your handicap, etc?
The history of Decathlon
Michel Leclercq believed that the best sports products need to be available to everyone. That led to him founding Decathlon in 1976, opening a single store of this family-owned company in Lille, France. Tasting retail success, the company expanded its services across Europe over the next few years, opening branches in Germany, Spain, UK, etc. before eventually branching outside of Europes borders and reaching places like India, Hong Kong, Australia and, of course, South Africa (in 2017). Currently, Decathlon operates in 96 countries in approximately 2080 stores worldwide.
Aiding in Decathlon’s reputation is the fact that its wide range of sporting goods are sold under their own brands. For instance, fishing equipment under the Caperlan brand, Rugby under Offload, Sailing under Tribord etc. And don’t forget the biggest advantage of all: that Decathlon’s simple-yet-smart products have been (and still are) fairly priced in order to welcome as many new customers to the Decathlon family.
