The origins of Helly Hansen
Helly Hansen was founded in Oslo Norway in 1877 by Helly Juell Hensen. From a young age of 14, Helly worked on sea and during that time experienced firsthand all there is to know about the crashing waves and more. At age 35, Helly and his wife Maren began manufacturing oilskin jackets, pants, souwesters and tarpaulins which were treated with linseed oil to create a waterproof barrier. This proved to work well and in just over 5 years they had already sold more than 10,000 pieces and started exporting in 1879.
Investcorp acquired the Helly hansen in 1997 and in 2009 the company relocated its main headquarters to Moss Norway. During 2012 Investcorp sold its Helly Hensen interests to Altor Equity Partners investment group.
